Record Numbers of Students Participate in Health Ambassadors and Assessment Team

STRIDE’s Health Ambassadors and Assessment Team (A-Team) currently boast record numbers of student participants. The two teams, which are service-learning classes offered through the Kinesiology Department, provide Cal Poly students with valuable field experience in various areas of health promotion. Both classes typically average approximately 15 students; this quarter they both have 28. This jump in enrollment includes an increased number of returning students; both classes can be taken multiple times for credit.

Joel Dowers, A-Team instructor, said that the promise of hands-on experience using Cholestech machines to measure blood glucose and cholesterol and involvement in San Luis Obispo County’s four-year preschool body mass index (BMI) study drew students to join A-Team this quarter.

Rachel Roberts, a first year kinesiology student, said she joined Health Ambassadors for a number of reasons. “I chose to join Health Ambassadors because they promote good nutrition and active lifestyles, which I believe are important and will provide me with valuable experience,” Roberts said.
