Letter from the Director

june 2014

Dear STRIDE family,

On March 14, speaking at the Building a Healthier Future Summit in Washington, D.C, First Lady Michelle Obama emphasized that cooking is one of the best ways families can improve their health. We agree. In fact, STRIDE’s Pink and Dude Chefs nutrition education and culinary skills training program is expanding nationwide.

We have partnered with researchers from Vanderbilt University to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the Pink and Dude Chefs program at several sites in Nashville, Tenn. In parallel, STRIDE is developing the Pink and Dude Chefs Online Campus, an innovative, train-the-trainer series that will empower anyone, regardless of nutritional or culinary background, to implement a program in their own community. Pink and Dude Chefs is going places, literally.

In other good news, Cal Poly recently hosted the second annual Evening of Green and Gold to honor the university's top donors and volunteers. STRIDE’s Health Ambassadors presented at this event’s student showcase, an exhibition of Cal Poly’s finest student projects from across campus. It was an honor to be recognized for our team’s efforts and successes.

Spring quarter always brings important milestones. This quarter, our Health Ambassadors and Assessment Team classes enjoyed record enrollment numbers. Also, on March 4, the Cal Poly Academic Senate voted unanimously to approve the proposal for the Center for Solutions Through Research In Diet and Exercise (better known as STRIDE). In the coming months, STRIDE will officially become a university center. Very exciting!

Finally, as at the end of every academic year, we bid bittersweet farewells to some of our wonderful students. I want to congratulate six exceptional graduating STRIDE students and thank them for their dedication and commitment to excellence. As a primarily student-run organization, STRIDE depends on our students for everything we do, from research and outreach to administration and graphic communication. We thank you and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors — we’ll miss you!

Thanks, everybody, for another great year. Have a wonderful summer, and we look forward to working with you to create a high-impact 2014-15 academic year. See you in the fall.
