Fall 2014

The latest addition to STRIDE’s quarterly newsletter is STRIDE Science, a recurring column that features the latest research awards and publications of STRIDE faculty members.

Research Awards

Todd Hagobian, kinesiology professor, received a newly awarded $3.4 million grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to study how a lifestyle intervention for pregnant mothers affects their untreated partners.

Adrian Mercado, kinesiology student, received a newly awarded $63,000 diversity supplement grant from NHLBI to study health outcomes in an intervention study of pregnant mothers and their offspring.

Suzanne Phelan, kinesiology professor, received year three funding of a $3.4 million award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to study the efficacy of an online postpartum weight loss program for mothers in the Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC). She also received a third year of her $3.4 million award from NHLBI to study the efficacy of a multicomponent program to prevent excessive gestational weight gain in mothers.

The Cal Poly/French Hospital Prevention Working Group received a $50,000 award from the university and the hospital to study a couples-based approach to obesity prevention in expectant couples.

Aydin Nazmi, STRIDE director and nutrition professor, and Jessie Bierlich, nutrition graduate student, received a Cal Poly Research, Creative and Scholarly Activities Grant of $13,500 to study four cohorts of the Pink and Dude Chefs program in California and Tennessee. Nazmi also received a $14,000 subcontract from the San Luis Obispo Public Health Department to research and implement Smarter Lunchroom principles in two local elementary schools in conjunction with a STRIDE research team and graduate student Polina Zhuzhina.
