STRIDE Hires Mobile Health Unit Project Coordinator

< Shelby Bachelder
started in January as the STRIDE's
Mobile Health Unit Project
Coordinator.

Under the direction of Shelby Bachelder and STRIDE Director Suzanne Phelan, the mobile health unit will provide women, infants and children on the Central Coast with access to preventive healthcare and treatment during the pre-conception, prenatal and postnatal periods.

The mobile health unit — a state-of-art van that will house two rooms for exams and education, refrigeration, an area for referrals as well as space to conduct research — will travel several times a week to underserved areas, and provide care, outreach and social services to women and children.

Prior to working with STRIDE, Bachelder worked as a bilingual advocate for the Safe Alliance in Austin, Texas. In just her first few weeks with STRIDE, Bachelder has created materials for the unit and has researched mobile health units.

“We are working hard to make sure our unit is equipped with everything needed,” Bachelder said.

The unit is part of a collaboration between STRIDE, the Cal Poly/French Hospital Prevention Working Group and the Santa Maria Women’s Health Center. Thanks to generous contributions — including a contribution from Jennifer Maxwell, a long-time STRIDE supporter and benefactor — STRIDE hopes to launch the mobile van this summer.

In the coming months, Bachelder will continue to work with community partners to staff the unit, to determine what services will be offered, and locate spots and times to park the unit.
