This summer, the STRIDE team hosted a networking session with California State Senator Bill Monning (D-17) on the Cal Poly campus. Senator Monning serves on the Senate Committee on Health and shares with STRIDE an interest in public health.

During his visit, Senator Monning toured the offices and met team members who updated him on their latest projects. He also heard from faculty, graduate and undergraduate students about their research projects and programs, including Healthy Beginnings, Fit Moms, Healthy Partners, Pink and Dude Chefs, the SLO  County preschool BMI study, Smarter Lunchrooms and Activity4All.

“Senator Monning is a true legislative champion for public health. It was a great treat to meet him in person and discuss our common goals,” said Aydin Nazmi, STRIDE director.

This was Senator Monning’s first visit to STRIDE but not the first time he has displayed interest in public health promotion. He has introduced multiple bills aimed at curbing the health effects of sugary beverages.
