Letter from the Director

november 2013

Dear STRIDE Family,

Welcome to the new format of the STRIDE quarterly. In keeping with newfangled digital media trends, we have linked it to the new STRIDE website. The new format is easier on the eyes, more efficient for you the reader, and includes links to other websites of interest. Special thanks goes to STRIDE’s highly competent and creative PR/Media team for making it all happen. Please let us know what you think.

Technological advancements aside, summer and fall at STRIDE were filled with an influx of exciting new projects and people. We are partnering with the San Luis Obispo County Department of Public Health on farm-fresh nutrition education in elementary schools across the county, conducting new research on the Pink and Dude Chefs program, and forming a partnership and campaign with the newly formed Cal Poly Alliance for Public Health.

The new FLASH Research Group, an interdisciplinary team of Cal Poly faculty, also began meeting regularly this month with the goal of publishing scientific articles based on the thousands of students we studied between 2009 and 2012. In addition, we are proud to announce that a STRIDE faculty member, Todd Hagobian, secured a major grant from the National Institutes of Health in conjunction with Suzanne Phelan’s acclaimed work in maternal weight gain and retention.

As if all that weren’t enough, STRIDE is happy to announce the births of two new family members. Heather Starnes and her husband, Jason, welcomed their first child, a girl named Zoelle, on May 26, and Hagobian and his wife, Nicole, welcomed their third child and first daughter, Ava Claire, on October 3. Congratulations to our beautiful families and their new babies!

In the coming months, STRIDE will continue to conduct cutting-edge interdisciplinary research, foster collaborative partnerships, and form the next generation of leaders. As always, please stop by the STRIDE offices whenever you can — we would love to see you.

Best wishes,

Aydin Nazmi
