City to the Sea Half Marathon

October 13, 2013

STRIDE's A-Team and Health Ambassadors teamed up to host the Kids' Zone and Kids' Fun Run at the City to the Sea Half Marathon in October. More than 200 kids participated throughout the day, and close to 30 STRIDE volunteers made it possible.

The day began with a quarter-mile Kids' Fun Run. Participants ages 3 to 10 sprinted around Dinosaur Caves Park in Pismo Beach and finished in the Kids' Zone where they enjoyed post-race refreshments: water bottles and freshly picked local apples from SLO Creek Farms. The Kids' Zone also featured educational activities, games, and a bounce house.

Health Ambassadors hosted two booths: "Beat the Sweet" showed kids how much sugar is in many popular beverages such as soda, juice and energy drinks, and offered samples of sugar-free "spa water" (water flavored with cucumbers and lemon). "Veggie Booth" provided samples of baby carrots with hummus, featured a "carrot quiz" that taught kids about the benefits of carrots.

A-Team hosted an obstacle course to represent the four chambers of the heart. Kids popped balloons that represented the oxygen flowing through the heart. A-Team also hosted several other games such as duck-duck-goose and red light-green light.
