Community Announcements from STRIDE Partners
STRIDE community partners offer opportunities for anyone to get involved in healthy lifestyles, and they’re changing and growing.
Volunteer Opportunities
The University of California Cooperative Extension in San Luis Obispo County has developed a new volunteer training and support program called the UC Garden Nutrition Extenders (UC GNE). The purpose of the UC GNE program is to build community capacity to support school gardens. The program is a collaboration between the UC CalFresh Nutrition Education program and the 4-H Youth Development Program and incorporates presentations and expertise from UC master gardeners, UC master food preservers and local non-profits. UC GNE volunteers complete 30 hours of hands-on training and are then matched with a school garden so they can provide support for planning and sustaining school gardens, planting with the seasons, tasting food from the garden with youth, teaching healthy eating concepts, and connecting California state standards with garden-based learning around the “Learn, Grow, Eat, Go!” junior master gardener curriculum.

Updates
One Cool Earth (OCE), a nonprofit that helps create school gardens, is expanding its programs. To support its expansion, OCE recently hired an Americorps fellow, Miranda Beal, to implement a volunteer infrastructure program to assist the organization. The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District and Atascadero Unified School District have both demonstrated a commitment to garden-based education, with a special interest in using school gardens to enhance academics and benefit student nutrition. Both districts are exploring ways to increase the amount of local, fresh produce served in school lunches and see gardening as a successful approach to helping kids learn to choose and consume healthy options.
Please contact Miranda Beal at miranda@onecoolearth.org or 805-266-5564 for more information about One Cool Earth or to volunteer.
