Three STRIDE Affiliates Receive Cal Poly Grants to Start Research Projects

Two STRIDE affiliates will begin new research this summer as part of Cal Poly’s Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities Grant Program (RSCA), which encourage professors to participate in research and professional activities outside the classroom. Sarah Keadle, a professor in kinesiology, and Brennan Davis, a marketing professor in the Orfalea College of Business, received awards for the 2017-18 academic year. Keadle received more than $15,000 to study “identified gaps in the literature and provide preliminary data on the potential association between charity-based incentives and physical activity in adolescents and young adult cancer survivors,” according to her grant application.

The RSCA committee granted Davis and his colleague, business Professor Joachim Scholz, $15,500 to conduct their research project, “Can Augmented Reality Shape Food Choices and Reduce Waste in a University Cafeteria.” With the help of STRIDE Director Suzanne Phelan, Davis and Scholz will study “the positive impact augmented reality can have on food consumption and sustainability,” according to their grant application.

Also, STRIDE affiliate Michael LaFrano, a faculty member in the Food Science and Nutrition Department, was awarded a grant from the Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) to study metabolomics of gestational diabetes. LaFrano will study altered metabolites early in pregnancy that may be used to predict pregnancy complications and prevent the lasting effects of this disease after birth. “This pilot data will help generate further hypotheses that will be followed up on in future grants,” according to the application.
